Spinal Decompression

Our backs carry the weight of all that we do from the moment we get up until we’re down at night. Even the slightest jarring impact, twist, or overuse can cause a misalignment in the vertebrae stacked on the spinal column, pressing on the discs that rest between them. Dr. Jason Madigan of Sport & Spine Chiropractic Rehab performs spinal decompression in Lock Haven, PA, to relieve the problems this compression can cause.

What Causes Spinal Compression?

The vertebrae and discs in our backs stack neatly on one another, supporting the spinal column enough to sustain our activities in conjunction with our back muscles.

Jarring impacts, carrying heavy loads, poor posture - many things can lead the vertebrae to come out of place or material from a damaged disc to leak into the surrounding area. The most frequent causes of this are usually home and auto accidents, improper lifting practices, and work-related injuries. Continual back use for a prolonged period of time can lead to compression, even with no impacts or specific activities.

Misaligned vertebrae usually pinch the nerves or discs in the area. If this happens, it will result in pain, tingling, and/or numbness to the arms, hands, legs, and/or feet. A reduction of proper blood circulation may lead to inflammation and soreness.

Many muscle groups of your back will also have to work harder for carrying an offset load, which can  lead to aches and soreness.

Does Spinal Decompression Fix Bulging Discs?

Yes. By stretching the spine enough for the disc material to move back into place, the pressure on the nerves will be released. Without impingements, the nerves will be able to relay messages normally. Muscles that have been overworking due to the weight imbalance will rest, allowing inflammation to subside.

We also offer coaching on how to prevent future compression. These suggestions can focus on whatever caused a previous misalignment as well as other common causes to be mindful about in the future.
